John Sebastian's Lovin' Spoonful combined his love of folk music with elements of contemporary electric rock in the '60s. More than 30 years later, Sebastian and a band of like-minded purists have reached into American history for true "folk" music. Chasin' Gus' Ghost gives listeners a scenic tour of the washboard, whiskey jug and banjo music of front porches and back alleys.
The "Gus" referred to in the title of this labor-of-love recording is Gus Cannon, who, in the 1920s, led Cannon's Jug Stompers, one of America's premier jug bands at a time when jug-band fever was heating up dance halls from Alabama to New York. Of course, times have changed since Cannon made a name for himself with songs like "Minglewood Blues" (better known as "New Minglewood Blues" by the Grateful Dead)

A documentary by Todd Kwait about the history and influence of jug band music, Chasin' Gus' Ghost, first screened at the 2007 San Francisco Jug Band Festival. The film features numerous well-known musicians in interviews and performances, including John Sebastian, Jim Kweskin, Geoff Muldaur, David Grisman, Fritz Richmond, Maria Muldaur, and Bob Weir of the Grateful Dead, as well as Taj Mahal as the voice of Gus Cannon. Many of these musicians performed at a sold-out concert at the San Francisco Jug Band Festival. Chasin' Gus' Ghost had its film festival premiere in October.
