It's austere and challenging, but Vitous is never ponderous; he sustains plenty of interest with his passion and staggering technique, dividing his time equally between pizzicato and arco statements. He's haunting and abstract on the four-part "Atlantis Suite" but comes down to earth with the Porgy & Bess-inspired "Regards to Gershwin's Honeyman," the Fain-Hilliard waltz "Alice in Wonderland," and the closing "Variations on Spanish Themes," an homage to Sketches of Spain.

Czechoslavakian bassist Miroslav Vitous is probably best known for his pioneering work with the Jazz-Fusion band Weather Report. However, since leaving the band in 1974, Vitous has produced some extraordinary pieces of work on his own. One such work is 1985's "Emergence", a personal and intimate album of solo bass material. Emergence" was recorded completely live in the studio without overdubs or any other trickery thus revealing the warm resonant tones of Vitous's upright bass. Emergence" offers a rare glimpse of Miroslav Vitous's flawless bass playing without the aid of other instruments.

Although Miroslav Ladislav Vitouš has had varying levels of success in the post-Weather Report years as bandleader, we can hardly help but marvel at this gem of a solo recording. With nary an overdub in sight and more than enough heart to spare, the Czech bassist plots an orchestral sweep through his precisely (at)tuned skills. The album is also superbly recorded, enhancing the instrument’s natural resonance by placing us in its very ribcage, as it were.
