String Quartet No 1 In E Minor. Composed By – Bedřich Smetana. 1. Allegro Vivo Appassionato. 2. Allegro Moderato Alla Polka. String Quartet No 1. Composed By – Leoš Janáček. 5. Adagio – Con Moto.

The combination of Smetana, the broad definer of Czech nationalism, and Janácek, the inward, intensely psychologically oriented master of the Czech interwar period, might seem an odd one, leapfrogging the crucial Czech chamber music figure of Dvorák. The program here, however, makes a great deal of sense, for Smetana's String Quartet No. 1 in E minor ("From My Life") is an autobiographical work that closely represents the composer's thought processes about, among other things, his encroaching deafness.

Allegro - Andante - Con Moto - Adagio - Tempo 1. A second new album this year from the much-fêted Takács Quartet presents three popular string quartets from Czechoslovakia.

Janáček: String Quartet No. 1 'The Kreutzer Sonata'. 3. Con Moto; Vivace; Andante. Janáček: String Quartet No. 2 'Intimate Letters'. Andante; Con Moto; Allegro. For a moment or two in the Smetana one might think that the Takács Quartet's almost Olympian objectivity wouldn't suit music that often seems to well up so directly from the heart. In fact it's a vindication of Smetana as a large-scale dramatic architect. And that 'objectivity' doesn't prevent 'From my life' becoming surprisingly moving at time. he same is true of the Janáček. The music touches, stirs, excites, but at the same time you're aware of how strongly each quartet is shaped as a whole.

No less personal are the two quartets by fellow Czech Leoš Janáček – The Kreutzer Sonata, inspired by Tolstoy’s novella – and Intimate Letters, reflecting his long distance-love affair with his friend and muse, Kamila Stösslová. Here, the constant shifts of rhythm, mood and texture – ghostly bowing near the bridge, rolling trills and shimmering tremolos – are captured beautifully by the twin violins of Edward Dusinberre and Károly Schranz above the firm foundations laid down by Walther and András Fejér’s cello
