Miles Davis & Gil Evans: The Complete Columbia Studio Recordings is a box set of music by jazz musicians Miles Davis and Gil Evans originally released on CD in 1996 and remastered and re-released in 2004. It collects work from 1957 through 1968 at Columbia Records recording studios. Miles Davis and Gil Evans had worked together on Davis' landmark 1949 album Birth of the Cool. Evans was a distinguished soloist, but it was his role as arranger that is well-illustrated here with alternate and working takes.
The brief, nine-month partnership of Miles Davis and Bill Evans yielded some of the most sublime and enduring jazz ever recorded. Evans influenced Davis’ outlook and guided his taste, introducing him to a host of modern classical composers. He then played catalyst to-and co-composer of much of the material on-the modal-jazz masterpiece Kind of Blue. On Jazz at the Plaza, a simple four-song album Miles’ sextet recorded live on Aug. 9, 1958, there’s a 10-minute version of My Funny Valentine featuring Davis and Evans as the sole soloists; Trane and Cannonball both lay out. Muted trumpet and brightly stroked piano are alone to spar, at moments halting and punchy, then playful and flowing.
Miles Davis (1926-1991) and Bill Evans (1929-1960) were two of the major luminaries in jazz history. During 1958 and 1959, Evans was the pianist of Miles' quintet and sextet, which produced some of the most memorable music of all time. Mingus At The Bohemia.

December 26, 1996 5:00AM ET. Miles Davis & Gil Evans: The Complete Columbia Studio Recordings. Thorough and thoroughly wonderful, right down to its gold-leaf binding, the sumptuous box devoted to the landmark late-’50s and ’60s studio collaborations of trumpeter Miles Davis and composer and arranger Gil Evans is more than a reissue event. It is a vital reconstruction of one of the most important artistic relationships in American popular music, let alone jazz. Even at six CDs bursting with alternate takes, previously unissued material and studio chatter, this set sums up a relatively brief, aesthetically focused chapter of Davis’ career
Miles Davis said: "Bill left the band in 1958 and went down to Louisiana to live with his brother. Then he came back after a while and formed his own group. After a while he got Scott LaFaro on bass and Paul Motian on drums and he became very popular with that group, winning a number of Grammy Awards
