They signed to HMV in 1959 and recorded an album before moving to Zodiac and Viking. Their early recordings have provided an source of inspiration for several generations of New Zealand garage bands, and are often compiled. They have recorded continually for over 40 years, recording for at least a dozen labels over the years.
Max Merritt was born in Christchurch on 30th April 1941 and by his early teenage years was engrossed in music, beginning guitar lessons at the age of twelve. By the mid-fifties, rock and roll had exploded around the world and Max was quite taken by the styles and sounds of Elvis Presley and Bill Haley. These singles were followed by the release of their debut album "C'mon Let's Go" at the beginning of 1960. In November 1959, Harry M Miller flew Max to Auckland for a solo spot on the 'Summertime Spectacular'. On his return to Christchurch, and also because he was now a recording star, his popularity soared even higher.
