'Rhizomes of Insanity' is a concept album based on a thought experiment around the concept of insanity," asserts vocalist/guitarist Vince Wilquin. It questions the origins of it, and tries to define where we set its boundaries with 'reason'. It eventually questions its place in our modern society and surmises that it has turned into an intrinsic, unavoidable but also necessary part of it and of every human being, which we're trying to repress at all costs. I think the nature of our perception of reality and the fine line between reason and insanity are some things all of us have wondered about at some point, and are some of mankind's existential questions," says Wilquin of the album's inspiration.

So, that leaves us at Fractal Universe’s new record Rhizomes Of Insanity, and where it takes off from the band’s previous fantastic debut full-length, Engram Of Decline. Much in the same way Darkane have described their own evolution, Fractal Universe is definitely a band that moves sideways instead of forward. I admit that I kind of don’t know exactly what that even means, but I definitely feel that. The Darkane comparisons on this album are pretty unavoidable once any of the choruses with harsh melodic vocals start up. The emphasis of this album overall to me is very oriented to lyrical riffing, combined with progressive stylings reminiscent of Swanö and Opeth, with a thrash undercurrent. Opener Oneiric Realisations has a post-chorus riff that perfectly defines what this album is about.
