When I saw what this album was about I knew I had to have it. Kayser690. Kayser690 Whitechapel art at its peak. The album sound is amazing. Listening to this you feel the struggles and pain of a broken mind. The production is brilliant every instrument fits perfectly in the global composition. The clean vocals don't sound forced and fit perfectly with the gutural brutal ones. Through darkness Whitechapel created something enlightling
Whitechapel: The valley. While we don’t always cover the so-called big name releases here at NCS, on those special occasions when we do we always try write something that actively adds to the conversation, rather than simply rehashing the same old tired tropes and clichés. After all, this is a band who have now comfortably reached that critic-proof level where a sufficiently large proportion of their fanbase will likely pick up whatever they put out, sight unseen, while their more committed detractors will continue to deride and denigrate the band for their ‘core roots, and nothing I write is likely to massively influence anyone from either side.

Our last album, Mark of the Blade (2016) did not sound exactly 'happy' either, but the majority of those songs did not have much emotion or vibe behind them, they were just straightforward metal songs. These songs have a darker, more melancholic presentation to them. With vocalist Phil Bozeman having never held back when it comes to speaking his mind, and delivering lyrics as uncompromising as his decimating vocals, this time around he gets even more personal, and in looking to the hardships of his childhood the music needed to fit the tone.
Whitechapel – The Valley Released: March 29th, 2019. Phil Bozeman // Vocals Ben Savage // Lead Guitar Alex Wade // Rhythm Guitar Gabe Crisp // Bass Zach Householder // Guitar Navene Koperweis // Drums. The trouncing grind of ‘Forgiveness Is Weakness’, the pounding groove of ‘Black Bear’, the pressing melodies of ‘The Other Side’ and the crushing descent into ‘Doom Woods’ all help to build an album steeped in melancholia and darkness. Even ‘Hickory Creek’, their first song to all but exclusively feature clean singing, hammers home the reality of loss. The haunting pain of vocalist Bozeman’s childhood hardships is evident in both the lyrical content and the delivery, manifesting an emotional and deeply personal catharsis.
This album’s 5 pre-released singles were an effective way to ease fans into what was to come with their new sound and album, with each becoming more and more apparent of new and fresh influences. The lead single, Brimstone, was a straightforward plodding banger that let everyone know that Whitechapel was not going to let up with the brutality any time soon. Phil’s opening guttural growl was a breath of fresh air for fans who may have been getting tired of the near-constant low-to-mid-range scream that he’s been doing for the past few albums straight.
The Valley solidifies the band in their current musical direction and is easily Whitechapel's most diverse and well-composed album. All I can say is that this is definitely one of the most well-written metal albums I have heard in quite some time. The interplay of the heavy and the melancholy is done beautifully and makes you want to continue listening to the album all the way through, and not just want to skip to other parts.
