Tales from Topographic Oceans is the sixth studio album by YES, released in 1973 on Atlantic Records. Presented as a double album with one track on each side, its concept is based on singer Jon Anderson’s interpretation of four Shastric scriptures from a footnote in Autobiography of a Yogi by Paramahansa Yogananda. It is the first studio album to feature drummer Alan White, who replaced Bill Bruford in 1972. Tales from Topographic Oceans became the first album in the UK to earn a gold certification prior to its release

This album more than any other seems to divide Yes fans: many think it is the best and most ambitious work any lineup of Yes ever recorded, while seemingly equal numbers equate it to Spinal Tap levels of self-indulgent absurdity and dismiss it as a complete waste which is it? Well, the worth of any music is of course in the ear of the beholder, but I seem to be one of the few people who come down somewhere in the middle on this one: it's pretty far from being their best or most consistent album, but there's certainly enough here to justify its existence.
