Anderson developed the entire story around the idea of an interstellar exodus from a place, a planet named Sunhillow, and he wrote the lyrics around the narrative based on the character of a spaceship’s architect named Olias. Ranyart is the navigator for the glider, and Qoquaq (pronounced 'ko-quake') is the leader who unites the four tribes of Sunhillow to partake in the exodus.
