The Turning Point is a live album by John Mayall, featuring British blues music recorded at a concert at Bill Graham's Fillmore East on 12 July 1969. When John Mayall was starting another band after the break-up of the Bluesbreakers in May 1969, he decided to have a band that would play "low volume music" – or music without "heavy lead guitar and drums"

His live album The Turning Point was the refined result of this risk taking. Mayall eliminated the drummer in his new mix. Perhaps this was partially inspired by the presence of the talented bassist Steve Thompson, a deeply jazz influenced musician who provided a surprisingly flexible foundation for this innovative band. Both Mayall and acoustic guitarist Jon Mark ably switched off in the rhythm guitar role, helping to highlight the intricacy of exchange among the band's musicians. With an acoustic guitar and, at times, a flute in the mix this drummerless arrangement was ideal.

This is a blues album which jazz lovers may also love; John Mayall’s ‘The Turning Point’, from 1969, is well worth rediscovering. Published on. November 15, 2018. Mayall delivers an expressive and earthy set, featuring a line-up that would have been unthinkable a few years before: acoustic guitar (Jon Mark), flute and tenor (Johnny Almond), and bass (Steve Thompson). What, no drummer? Yes, John Mayall had gone acoustic. Maybe some gig-goers felt disappointed at the lack of a six-string electric tyro, but nobody shouted Judas! and the audience response, captured by Hendrix engineer Eddie Kramer, is stoned ecstatic.
