The album consists of comic sketches of Tomlin in her most famous character, Ernestine, the nosy, aggressive, and sharp-tongued telephone operator. The album's tracks include monologues in which Ernestine tangles over the phone with Joan Crawford, Gore Vidal ("Mr. Veedle"), Martha Mitchell, and J. Edgar Hoover. It was recorded live at the intimate Ice House in Pasadena, California.

In the 70s when This Is A Recording was first produced as a phonograph record, I went through two or three of them before losing the last one in a move. By this time records had declined and cassette tapes had ascended. Over the years I would think of this album and all the fun I had with it, but couldn't find it on media for which I had a player. I was SOOOO surprised to find it as a CD and purchased it immediately and while it is now about 40 years old, it's cutting edge still works for those of us who remember the Golden Days of telephone and the people whom Ernestine slices with.

Lily Tomlin is a comedian and actress. She first shot to fame in 1970 when she joined the cast of the slapstick sketch show Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In. It won Tomlin a Tony, and was made into a film in 1991. On at least several occasions during its Broadway run, Tomlin donned disguises and chatted incognito with the crowds on the sidewalk lined up to get in. Like most of Tomlin's comedy act since the early 1970s, it was written by her long-time writer and lover, Jane Wagner.
