Description

Del Shannon (birth name Charles Weedon Westover) would have turned 83 years old today, 30 December 2017. In honor of his birthday, I'm sharing a high quality upload of his often overlooked 1968 album "The Further Adventures of Charles Westover". For most of my life, Del Shannon was only "Runaway" or "Hats Off to Larry"

Del Shannon (born Charles Weedon Westover; December 30, 1934 – February 8, 1990) was an American rock and roll and country musician and singer-songwriter, best known for his 1961 number 1 Billboard hit "Runaway". He learned to play the ukulele and guitar and listened to country-and-western music, by artists such as Hank Williams, Hank Snow, and Lefty Frizzell.

Del used his birth name on the title for this album, an erie and rocking mix of great tunes. The opener, Thinkin’ It Over, really nailed me the first time I heard it. But don’t let this Care of Cell 44 -like great rollicking opener distract you from the rest. The CD reissue on BGO offers eight bonus tracks, being mostly stuff cut between 1966 and 1968 and either unissued or used as single B-sides to A-sides taken from Westover. I also have Del’s last-but-one album, Drop Down And Get Me from 1981, recorded with the Heartbreakers backing and Tom Petty producing. On this outing Del’s uncomplicated songs fit the soulful no-frills playing of Mike Campbell, Benmont Tench & Co like a glove. Not quite up to Westover standard but certainly enjoyable

The Further Adventures of Charles Westover finds Shannon embracing psychedelia in a personalized way: Instead of imitating the whimsy of Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, or the creepy freak-outs of Their Satanic Majesties Request, he uses the cinematic quality of psychedelic pop to provide a vivid backdrop for his songwriting.

I had no idea Del Shannon ever made an album. This is a swirling soulful gem of an album. The 1968 psychedelic flourishes are of their time but here work to enhance solid melodies, rich vocals and strong songwriting. There is none of the forced whimsy that detracts from so many other albums of the era.

Great reissue for the money - similar in quality to the recent Rhino reissues (done to spec). Stands up well alongside my original pressing.

Anyone else notice the bass levels seems a bit boosted? I owned the original release years ago, and the new remaster seems pronounced in the 100-120hz range. Same stereo setup essentially, or it could just be my memory.
