Runaway" is a number-one Billboard Hot 100 song made famous by Del Shannon in 1961. It was written by Shannon and keyboardist Max Crook, and became a major international hit. It is No. 472 on Rolling Stone's list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time, compiled in 2010. Singer-guitarist Charles Westover and keyboard player Max Crook performed together as members of "Charlie Johnson and the Big Little Show Band" in Battle Creek, Michigan, before their group won a recording contract in 1960.

Del Shannon missed out on the US album chart after his initial hits, but finally cracked it on 22 June 1963 with Little Town Flirt. After ‘Runaway,’ Del’s deal with Big Top Records produced another top five American hit in ‘Hats Off To Larry,’ and he made the Hot 100 on another 14 occasions in the 1960s. But only one of his ten appearances after ‘Larry’ made the top 20. Ironically, it was at that relatively quiet point in Shannon’s career that he finally debuted on the US album countdown.
