Not to be confused with jazz bassist (born in Nashville, Tennessee, USA) Jimmy Lewis (2) (1918-2000). In his youth Lewis travelled extensively, leading to doubts about his place of birth. Itta Bena, Mississippi, seems likely.

Jimmy Lewis (April 11, 1918 – 2000) was an American double bassist who worked with the Count Basie Orchestra and sextet in the 1950s and with Duke Ellington, Cootie Williams, Billie Holiday and Ivory Joe Hunter before moving to bass guitar during his time with King Curtis. He provided the basslines for the musical Hair. Lewis freelanced extensively and performed on many albums by soul and jazz musicians, including Horace Silver and the Modern Jazz Quartet up until the late 1980s.
Lewis, you’re pretty good at chucking axes. I’ve never been so decent at something when trying it for the first time. Growing up, I was good at swimming and judo, but I wasn’t sporty. Over the last few years I’ve been writing more sad stuff. There are a lot of sad songs on the new album. I am interested in writing about all the amazing things that are happening, but I’m thinking: I wish I was with my ex-girlfriend so she can experience it, too. Are you single?
