Process is the debut studio album by Sampha, released on 3 February 2017 by Young Turks. The album was co-produced by Sampha and Scottish music producer Rodaidh McDonald. It won the Mercury Prize for 2017. As compared to Sampha's characteristic bedroom recording style, Process was recorded in professional recording studios. The album was primarily recorded in studios across Sampha's native city of London, although it was also partially recorded at Ocean Sound Recordings on the Norwegian island Giske.

In a way, Process feels like a concept album on which Sampha rediscovers himself. The musician’s mother was diagnosed with cancer the same year Sundaza came out, and as her primary caregiver, he naturally focused his attention on her well-being. Now, he’s attempting to reconnect with his core while coping with despair. In the past, he’d mix his voice to fit within the instrumental; on Process, he makes it the focal point. Co-produced with Rodaidh McDonald, Process brings to mind James Blake while nodding to mainstream hip-hop. On Under, in particular, Sampha utilizes a sleek trap beat. On album closer What Shouldn’t I Be?, you feel Sampha’s air of prolonged detachment. It catches the singer at his most vulnerable, trying to remember the sketches of his childhood. Close your eyes, and you can almost see Sampha’s family-happy, affectionate, and together.

Sludge and grunge are pretty much synonymous, at least outside the context of music, so it’d only make sense that there be some crossover between the two worlds. You could arguably make the case that Nirvana’s Bleach crosses over into some sludge territory, though it’s fairly decisively not a metal album. But The Melvins, Seattle’s heaviest band, are one of the most important bands in all of sludge history-and they just happened to benefit from all the attention afforded the burgeoning grunge scene in their backyard.
