In 1912, the pitface miner Augustin Lesage heard a voice telling him that he was going to become a painter and he then made his first automatic drawings during a spiritualistic seance. He took up painting, guided by the spirits, and practised faith healing. From 1923 on, he devoted himself solely to painting, producing works characterised by monumentality and symmetry around a central axis.
