Doris Duke (born Doris Curry; 1945) is an American gospel and soul singer, best known for her 1969 album I'm A Loser. Duke was born in Sandersville, Georgia, and reportedly started singing with gospel groups including the Queen of Gospel Albertina Walker and The Caravans, though this has been questioned. By 1963 she was working in New York City on sessions and as a backing singer at the Apollo Theatre. She also recorded some demos for Motown Records, but none were ever released.

Originally released on the Canyon label in 1970, I'm a Loser found only intermittent life on small domestic and Japanese labels. Bonds and producer Jerry Williams Jr. and are executed nicely by a crack Capricorn Studio band

Doris Duke was born Doris Curry, in Sandersville, Georgia in 1945, although the month isn't known. By 1963, Doris had reached the New York City music scene and was earning a crust as both a session singer and a regular back-up artist at the city's famed Apollo Theatre. Running Away From Loneliness', her first single, came out in 1966. Two years later her pairing of 'You Can't Do That' and 'Lost Again', (bonus tracks on the CD) came out on the newly-minted Jay Boy label. Jerry Williams Jr had a hand in writing ten of the twelve songs so it must have been largely down to him that "I'm A Loser" was regarded as "a woman's album". He put his ability to write from a woman's point of view down to the fact he grew up surrounded by strong women. When I'm writing about women," he said in the same interview, "I'm writing with my aunts, my mother, my grandmother and everybody.

The lean, Stax-inspired numbers also are very decent and even contain Duke's big hit "To the Other Woman (I'm the Other Woman). The fate of the love weary is the main subject matter here and all its attendant drama is not only captured well by Duke's pleading vocal delivery, but it is unobtrusively underscored by the minimal and tasteful string arrangements. I'm a Loser may be a somewhat obscure title, but it is one that would fit into any good soul collection.

This album is considered by many - including the late Dave Godin - to be the greatest deep soul album of all time. To satisfy the demand from those who missed its previous (and very brief) Japanese CD reissue in the early 1990s, Kent is honored to restore I'm A Loser to catalog, as part of this retrospective of Doris' two year collaboration with another R&B legend, Jerry Williams Jr. . This CD actually includes two albums produced by Swamp Dogg (Jerry Williams, J. for Doris Duke: "I'm a Loser" and "A Legend in Her Own Time. Whether you're talking about the first album or the whole package, it's all relevant: this music is amazing beyond words.
