Philly Jazz turns the corner into funk this week with a live show from Keller Williams at the TLA recorded in April of 2013.
Keller Williams’s 20th album would constitute a weird left turn in the discographies of most folk musicians. But it fits Williams like a tailored costume. He may be a tourist in the land of funk, but he’s the sort of tourist who moves with such purpose that locals ask him for directions. Recorded live with a four-piece band and two female vocalists, the album delivers what Williams has offered his fans since the ’90s: spot-on covers and rambling guitar tangents. He rose to cult fame for his solo live performances, in which he used looping technology to act as a one-man band.
I put this album out as a live documentation of the More Than A Little project, which I put together for a holiday run of shows in Virginia and North Carolina in 2012 (The Norva in Norfolk, The National in Richmond, and The Neighborhood Theatre in Charlotte). Living out a dream of having soulful female singers beside me, along with a ridiculously funky rhythm section this album showcases my inner funk and it is super fun for me to revisit. Four originals, and six covers ranging from obscure to familiar. It isn’t anything but a party. Kw. Learn even more about More Than A Little.
Keller Williams Incident is a collaborative performance between Williams and The String Cheese Incident. They have performed together, and Williams' 1999 album Breathe was released collaboratively under the name Keller Williams Incident. The Funk album will be Williams’ 20th track since his first release Freak, released in 1994. During solo performances, Williams (also referred to as K-Dub) is known to loop a variety of instruments together, creating his trademark sound that very few individual performers can recreate. Although he is known mostly for his solo shows, on the upcoming tour he will be backed by More Than a Little, a five-piece group that features two female vocalists, a bassists, a drummer and a keyboard player

Among those elements are lyrics, which seem to be written more with a sense of how they sound than what they mean. How else could one come up with tracks called "Freeker by the Speaker" and "Butt Sweat"?) Occasionally, though, Williams is moved to express his philosophy of life in the words of new-age self-actualization, as when he chants the greeting-card lines "Work like you don't need the money, love like you've never been hurt, dance like nobody is watching" during "More Than a Little.
Only 10 left in stock (more on the way). Only 6 left in stock (more on the way). And as revered and successful each are in their own right, the collaboration delivers much more than either act alone. Recorded at Music City s famed Butcher Shoppe studios, the album's 12 songs a mix of originals and covers - put a unique twist on Americana music's long storytelling tradition, and theimpeccable musicianship displayed on Pick captures all the heart and heartache of the bluegrass genre.
