Cocoon Recordings has never been shy about pitching curve balls to the crowd. It also has an instinct for knowing what we want, even before we do! So here we are, with both these concepts in full effect in the form of International Anything’s „Running in the Underwood. Markus Nikolai and Ole Schulte’s fledgling project has already featured on both Cocoon and Nikolai’s ubiquitous Perlon imprint and the Frankfurt/Berlin axis represented by these two heavyweight labels is perfectly encapsulated in this ‘summer anthem in the making’  . Undoubtedly, the album tells a very personal story. Mario Hammer And The Lonely Robot succeed in evoking the same emotional state in the listener that they themselves felt during its creation, producing an album of real depth, innovation and distinction in the process. Cocoon is a French pop-folk band from Clermont-Ferrand (France) that sings in English. It was created in 2006 by Mark Daumail (born 6 December 1984), alongside Morgane Imbeaud. They released the albums My Friends all Died in a Plane Crash in 2007 and Where the Oceans End in 2010, which were defined by dual lead vocals from both, and by its coupling of mostly upbeat-sounding music and very dark lyrics.

Emma Gatrill is a t based in Brighton, UK. Her debut, 2012’s Chapter I, was a poignant collection of songs based around her then-latest acquisition – the harp. Five years and hundreds of live shows with dozens of different bands later, her larger-scale live ambitions fed back into the writing and recording process for Gatrill’s forthcoming second album, Cocoon. The album showcases a huge leap forward in scope and imagination. The harp, tender vocal and unique take on classic songwriting are still at the core of Gatrill’s sound, but the arrangements draw from a much wider and often darker sonic palette – from orchestral strings to monosynths, drum machines to tap shoes and Casio keyboards to vibraphones. Gatrill’s circle of influences has widened too.

Objekt ’s Cocoon Crush opens on a lonely riff with a curious sonic character, part pan flute and part mandolin. Pizzicato strings, wooden mallets, birdsongs, and gurgling water join, but it’s difficult to differentiate between the real and the synthetic. This enigmatic mixture is a shot across electronic music’s bow, one launched from a catapult deep in the uncanny valley. That narrative approach also plays out across the album, and the story is of Hertz’s own estrangement from dance music itself. Cocoon Crush begins in relatively familiar territory: Lost and Found (Lost Mix) is the kind of atmospheric ambient techno you can imagine a DJ slotting in a warmup set. But he spends the next few tracks exploring slower tempos and more elastic cadences, letting himself be led by the particularities of his sounds rather than by clubbers’ demands.
