REVIVAL is a unique sounding and all instrumental album that is primary based on progressive rock but includes a lot of BASIM's native Arabic sounds along with jazz-fusion and trippy even Krautish psychedelia. While many Western artists ranging from Agitation Free to Rahmann have tackled the Middle Eastern and progressive rock fusion from the European perspective, i can't think of one other example outside of AL BASIM who has delivered this equation from the opposite side of the coin.

In the 90s Al Basim relocated to France performing with The Gypsy Kings and recording a second album in 2006, 27 years after his striking and still largely obscured debut. This story also features a personal coda when I contacted Al Basim and told him how much I loved Revival. He send me a brief letter in return. Turned out the eyes on Revival were those of a kind and gentle man, grateful to hear his music, even after so many years, was being appreciated.

This album has an average beat per minute of BPM (slowest/fastest tempos:, BPM).

Privately issued in 1979, Al Basim’s sole LP Revival, is one of the most sought after artifacts released at the end of the psychedelic era. Original copies are impossibly rare, and command astonishing prices. Recorded shortly after Al Basim immigrated to the United States from Iraq, the album is a stunning blend of jazz, prog, new age, and the sounds and structures of the Middle East - an image of a broader musical culture which existed in the region before political realities unleashed their destructive force

When one day I walked into my local record store and asked if something out of the ordinary had arrived, all fingers pointed instantly to this album on their ‘wall of fame’ (read wall filled with expensive records). The cover certainly attracted my attention: Al Basim’s intensely dark brooding eyes subliminally messaged me to either buy or die. It was my first encounter with modern Iraqi music, as Al Basim (or rather Basim Al-Hashimi) was born in Baghdad, the nation’s capital. A guitar enthusiast, he migrating to America in 1987 where Revival was recorded with drummer Phil Canter, bass player John Starrett and flutist David Reskin. An eclectic mix of jazz-rock with avant-garde overtones, a hint of progressive and a touch of psychedelics, the album proved money exceptionally well-spent. Musically Revival is a perfect blend of western and eastern influences and as such completely out of touch with the then-current post-punk zeitgeist. And thus the few hundred copies, released privately by Al Basim, disappeared without much trace. Redemption came when Revival gained a four star rating in Hans Pokora’s book ‘3001 Record Collector Dreams’. Beautiful dreamy songs like Poitiers and Souvenir, the avant garde Open Space or jazzy History Of The World certainly affirm this rating. In the 90s Al Basim relocated to France performing with The Gypsy Kings and recording a second album in 2006, 27 years after his striking and still largely obscured debut.
