The Organized Crime Control Act of 1970 (Pu. 922 October 15, 1970), was an Act of Congress sponsored by Democratic Senator John L. McClellan and signed into law by . President Richard Nixon. RN Fights Organized Crime. Forty-four years ago today, President Richard Nixon signed the Organized Crime Control Act (OCCA) into law at the Justice Department in Washington, DC. This piece of legislation would prove to be highly useful for the Justice Department and FBI when prosecuting entrenched leaders of organized crime, especially the so called Mafia. Over time, this legislation would provide the federal government with the adequate enforcement abilities to prosecute criminals engaged in terrorist activities and provide the basis for the modern witness protection program.

Panelists, who were Nixon-era legal experts from the White House, Justice Department, and Congress, spoke on President Nixon’s work with Congress to enact sweeping bipartisan anti-crime legislation and give the Justice Department the tools to more effectively fight organized crime. James Rosen moderated. David Ferriero gave introductory remarks and supplemented the presentation with original documents from the period.
From the mysterious origins of the Sicilian Mafia, Japanese Yakuza, and the Chinese Triads to the new emerging global powers in organized crime including the Russian Organizatsiya and the Mexican Cartels, this explosive investigation reveals the past, present, and The History of Organized Crime is a fascinating insight into many previously hidden aspects of the underworld.
The Kefauver hearings on organized crime proved a fascinating and engrossing revelation to many Americans - introducing for the first time to many viewers terms such as the Mafia and the details of how criminal organizations worked. During eight days of hearings in New York City in mid-March 1951, for example, over 50 witnesses described the highest-ranking crime syndicate in America - an organization allegedly led by Frank Costello who had taken over from Lucky Luciano. The act inadvertently enshrined organized crime. That was Kefauver’s legacy. The Stevenson-Kefauver ticket lost to the Eisenhower-Nixon ticket in 1956, and Kefauver returned to his Senate post.
