Queen (album) - Queenpedia. com - A comprehensive Queen Discography, Queen Interviews, Queen History. Everything you need to know about Freddie Mercury, Brian May, Roger Taylor, and John Deacon. The history of this album would not be complete unless a little background is given on the formation of Queen. Brian May and Roger Taylor, who had been performing in their own bands in their own hometowns of Middlesex and Truro, respectively, throughout the 1960s, finally crossed paths in 1968 when Roger answered an ad placed by two aspiring musicians, Brian and former bandmate and good friend Tim Staffell.

Like any patchy but promising debut from a classic rock group, it's often easy to underrate Queen's eponymous 1973 debut, since it has no more than one well-known anthem and plays more like a collection of ideas than a cohesive album. But what ideas! Almost every one of Queen's signatures are already present, from Freddie Mercury's operatic harmonies to Brian May's rich, orchestral guitar overdubs and the suite-like structures of "Great King Ra.

Queen’s debut album, a mix of progressive rock, heavy metal, and/or hard rock, showcases songs by Freddie Mercury (frontman, primary vocalist and pianist) and Brian May (lead guitarist), with one track by drummer Roger Taylor. After many passed-on bass players, it was John Deacon who finally became Queen’s official bass player in January 1971. After the groundbreaking success of Queen’s fourth album, A Night at the Opera, Queen’s first album gained far more acclaim (and sales). In and of itself, at the time, in mid-1973, very, very few predicted the album as an indicator of what would become legendary, blockbuster rock-god success. Queen Q&A.

Queen's debut album was recorded in London between 1971 and 1972 at Trident Studios and De Lane Lea studios. All but one of the tracks were produced by Queen, Roy Baker and Trident's resident producer John Anthony, with The Night Comes Down instead produced by the band and Louie Austin at De Lane Studios. The engineers for the sessions were Roy Baker, Mike Stone, Ted Sharpe and David Hentschel. Queen was released on July 13th 1973 in the UK and attained Gold sales status. In America it was issued in September, with a revised pink cover replacing the usual purple one, and also reached Gold sales. Singles from this album: Keep Yourself Alive, Liar.
