Whammy! is the third studio album by American new wave band the B-52's. It was recorded at Compass Point Studios in Nassau, Bahamas, in December 1982 and was produced by Steven Stanley. The record was refined and mastered at Sterling Sound, New York City. It was released on April 27, 1983 in the United States, with Warner Bros. Records as the primary label.
Smartly, they decided to not simply replicate the skewed Southern funk of that album, choosing to update their signature sound with drum machines and new wave synths. As a result, it now sounds a little forced and dated, but the best moments - "Legal Tender," "Whammy Kiss," "Butterbean," "Song for a Future Generation" - rank as B-52's classics, and the entire record is certainly entertaining, even with its faults. Whammy Kiss" and "Butterbean" do actually concern sex and food, respectively, while "Legal Tender" and "Queen of Las Vegas" show off a healthy respect for money-that is, a disrespectful attraction to its alluring usefulness. Song for a Future Generation" is a completely affectionate, completely undeluded look at the doomed, hopeful, cheerfully.
Before the 1986 album Bouncing Off the Satellites was released, Ricky Wilson died of Aids-related illness, having kept his illness secret from all of his bandmates except Strickland until just before his death. We saw Ricky get thin and asked, ‘Are you OK?’ And he said, ‘Oh, I stopped eating Mexican food. The B-52s honoured their Athenian past in Deadbeat Club, remembering the time before they were famous, when they either had deadbeat jobs or no jobs – hence the title – and would live the lives of art students. It’s very nostalgic, and it’s about things that really happened. We had a going-away party for our friend Robert Waldrop: a silent party.
