The themes are big, the harmonies are bigger, the rhythms are bigger yet, and the colors are the biggest of all, but none of it is especially memorable. Although Bliss remains a far less distinctive musical figure than Britten, Walton or Tippett, his best work hardly deserves to languish in comparative obscurity. Chandos’s generous compilation is an ideal introduction to his music, with the Colour Symphony, in particular, offering an attractive mixture of Elgarian warmth and Stravinskian rhythmic dynamism. The Ulster Orchestra is outstanding and, as ever, Chandos’s engineering produces a luxurious sound, highlighting the brilliance and richness of Blissorchestration.
