Desi Arnaz (March 2, 1917 – December 2, 1986) was a Cuban-born American musician, actor and television producer.
Desi Arnaz did not introduce the conga to America, but he is the one who popularized it and invented the conga line. Ironically, Desi never recorded a mambo tune, as the style did not become popular in this country until the 1950s, by which time he was entirely busy doing I Love Lucy and running Desilu Productions. Desi essentially stopped recording music after 1949 (at the age of just 32), which is really a shame. The cuts are almost all strong and all are well recorded, especially when you compare the sound quality to those on some other big band recordings that have been reissued.
A new version of Last. The Best of Desi Arnaz: The Mambo King. Overview (current section).
The Best of Desi Arnaz: The Mambo King, 1992.
Arnaz burst onto the American music scene when Latin music was enjoying its first taste of success. A record like "Babalu" was viewed back then as primitive and exciting, and Desi's sex appeal and good looks made him the Ricky Martin of his day. He was virtually the only bandleader who had success after World War II, and his combination of highbrow and lowbrow with loads of charisma was irresistible. That this music still holds up well today says more for Desi's abilities than the current vogue for Latin music. Those only familiar with Arnaz from his stint on I Love Lucy are in for a major surprise at the high quality of music aboard this collection.
