Ben Heppner's Lohengrin is very beautifully sung and he is more dramatically involved than in his other Wagner recordings. Once in awhile Nelson Eddy came to mind, the Indian Love call and all that. But that's Ben. His is one of the most satisfying Lohengrins on record. Heppner's Lohengrin is one of his best recordings, right up there with his Énée in Les Troyens, also under Colin Davis's direction and much finer than his attempt at Tristan for Levine in that awful film 'Porky und Petunia' with Jane Eaglen. I see red just thinking about that travesty. Jan-Hendrik Rootering is magnificent as the King. Sweet is ok. Not very distinctive, but she sings capably. Big fan of Colin Davis in general. Certainly not a first choice, but worth a listen for Heppner and, yes, Marton.
