Christian Boesch is also a very good Papageno who sings well and avoids the hamminess of some his recorded competitors. Talvela is an imposing Sarastro as he was for Solti a few years earlier. Hiestermann and Van Dam are fine in their roles. Despite being past his vocal prime, Hotter's Speaker is wonderful in his exchanges with Tamino under Bohm. The ladies are a mixed bag. Cotrubas is a decent Pamina but the voice as such isn't a great one. Donat nails the florid passages and high notes of the Queen of the Night. For some reason, she did not record her own dialogue . The Vienna choral and orchestral forces sing and play well. Levine is in typical form, but if you like his way with the score, he leads an equally good cast in the Metropolitan Opera Production preserved on DVD. In addition, you get the wonderful David Hockney designed sets as a visual treat.

Christian Boesch (born 27 July 1941 in Vienna) is an internationally acclaimed Austrian operatic baritone. He is the son of the soprano Ruthilde Boesch, and studied at the University of Music and Performing Arts, Vienna, from 1959 to 1964. He was the pupil of Alfred Jerger, and made his official debut at the Stadttheater, Bern, in 1966. It was in 1978 when Boesch came to prominence, as Papageno in Die Zauberflöte, at the Salzburg Festival, in Jean-Pierre Ponnelle's production, conducted by James Levine. The next year, the singing-actor made his debut at the Metropolitan Opera, as Papageno. He returned for the same opera in 1981 (now with Lucia Popp and Gail Robinson alternating as Pamina, and Zdzisława Donat as the Queen of Night), and the same season sang Monsieur Presto in the Met premiere of Les mamelles de Tirésias (directed by John Dexter).

Mozart wrote Die Zauberflöte (The Magic Flute) for a suburban theatre in Vienna, the Theater auf der Wieden. He drew on the magical spectacle and earthy comedy of popular Viennese theatre.
