An Alpine Symphony (Eine Alpensinfonie), Op. 64, is a tone poem for a very large orchestra written by German composer Richard Strauss in 1915. It is one of Strauss's largest non-operatic works; the score calls for about 125 players and a typical performance usually lasts around 50 minutes. The program of An Alpine Symphony depicts the experiences of eleven hours (from daybreak just before dawn to the following nightfall) spent climbing an Alpine mountain.

Mehta gives it more weight than most. The finale is also a bit unpromising, since Schmidt takes up Strauss's technique of endless, multi-layered fugal noodling in the woodwinds and horns. We aren't far from the dithering Strauss wind serenades. Later development is haphazard and interrupted (it also outlives its welcome after at over 25 minutes), and after an attempt at an energetic code, the music dies away sadly with a reprise of the opening trumpet motto. The players here are members of the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra, again under Zubin Mehta, who make as convincing a case for the work as is possible.
