Pearl Jam on record have essentially been reduced to the rock ‘n’ roll version of wearing sweatpants: they’ve given up trying to impress anyone, so they may as well be comfortable. Their first studio album in four years continues the trend. Like 2009’s Backspacer before it (and 2006’s Pearl Jam before it, and 2002’s Riot Act before it), Lightning Bolt begins with a spirited sprint before sputtering out and winding up in dullsville.

Pearl Jam have become their heroes, but, like Springsteen, clearly do not want to become fat Elvis. So on their 10th LP, they overthink, overemote and overreach - fruitfully. If the party line on 2009’s Backspacer was that it was PJ having fun, Lightning Bolt is the sound of anger and brooding depression. In Pearl Jam terms, this is reason to be happy. Take Mind Your Manners, the first single, a d-the-room mix of Seattle mosh-pit metal and Bay Area snot punk that, at this late date, surely connotes classic rock

An underrated album which I dismissed for a long time. I've only just rediscovered it now and am really enjoying it. Nice SQ too, especially for a GZ pressing which I've found can be pretty hit and miss in the past. I suspect the quality of the sound has a lot to do with the mastering job. 10. "Sleeping By Myself" Most Pearl Jam fans will recognize this as a song first released as a heartbroken, spare uke tune from Vedder's 2011 solo album, "Ukulele Songs. Here, with the whole band taking part, the song takes on a jaunty bounce. 11. "Yellow Moon" A solemn Ament song with Vedder lyrics, "Yellow Moon" almost didn't make the album, according to both guitarists. McCready championed it, however. We ended up moving the key a little bit and that really brought the vocal out more in a really interesting way.

I remember witnessing Pearl Jam’s 2006 headline set at Leeds festival – one of their first festival appearances since nine fans were killed in a stampede during their performance at 2000’s Roskilde. This isn’t to say it’s a tortuous, miserable experience though – far from it. A terrific opening salvo of tracks, speckled in flecks of spit and packing plenty of bite, kicks off with Getaway, the most natural way to begin the album after Backspacer, fast and bouncy with a playful melody buried amid grouchy riffs.

In the two decades since debuting with Ten, they’ve bucked every convention in the music industry to cut their own path as rock ’n’ roll outsiders with distinct vision. The heart-racing backbeat and distorted guitar riffs of Mind Your Manners make a forceful introduction to the group’s tenth studio album. Lightning Bolt Pearl Jam.
