Who Is It was released on August 31, 1992, as the fifth single from Michael Jackson’s eighth studio album, Dangerous. MJ wrote and composed the song himself. The lyrics pertain to despair over being left by someone you love; some critics noted a comparison to the lyrics of the song to Jackson’s single, Billie Jean, from the album Thriller. The music video for the song was directed by a young David Fincher, who would go on to direct films such as Fight Club, Zodiac and The Social Network.
Michael Jackson’s album Bad (1987), released as a follow-up to Thriller, reached the top of the charts, with a record five No. 1 hits, including "Man in the Mirror," "The Way You Make Me Feel" and the title track, which was supported by a video directed by Martin Scorsese. Jackson spent more than a year on the road, playing concerts to promote the album. While highly successful, Bad was unable to duplicate the phenomenal sales of Thriller. Brother Randy was among those who questioned the authenticity of the recordings, but the Jackson estate later refuted the claims, according to The New York Times. Another posthumous album, Xscape, was released in May 2014.
Who Is It" was recorded by Michael Jackson in 1990 for his eighth studio album, Dangerous, which was released the following year. Jackson wrote and composed the track, and produced it with Bill Bottrell. It was released as the fifth single from Dangerous on August 31, 1992, by Jackson's record label, Epic Records. The lyrics of the song tell of a man who is left in despair when his lover suddenly leaves him. He learns that she was unfaithful to him and wants to know with whom the person was that she cheated
The world has unrequited love for Michael Jackson. One that will never fade. This Is It, both as a soundtrack and a documentary, exists for a number of reasons. On one level, its an attempt to focus and draw attention to what Michael Jackson lived for (music), and not what he did (scandal). On a more superficial level, this is Sony milking his legacy. Any true MJ fan will already own 90% of the songs that make up this two-disc set. It is, however, that 10% which justifies this albums existence.
