Description

The Avalanches return with a new sound and their first album in 16 years.

The Avalanches return with their first new album in 16 years. And there are no shortcuts. Throw in the usual long-delayed-album mix of bad equipment, poor health, perfectionism, and clearance issues, and who knows, maybe we’re lucky to get Wildflower, the first new Avalanches record in 16 years. It’s a music business truism that every sample-heavy instrumental act will eventually work with guest vocalists.

Wildflower is the second studio album by Australian electronic music group the Avalanches. It was first released on 1 July 2016 on Apple Music and widely on 8 July 2016 by Modular Recordings in Australia, by XL Recordings in the United Kingdom, and by Astralwerks in the United States. The album features multiple guest collaborators providing vocals and live instrumentation across its twenty-one tracks. It also features extensive sampling, especially from 1960s psychedelic music, and relates to the era through themes of counterculture and anti-establishment

Wildflower is the second studio album by Australian electronic music duo the Avalanches. Release date: 1 July 2016 (digital), 8 July 2016 (physical). The Avalanches - Wildflower It's hard to think of something that has fallen so far out of fashion as turntablism. The practice is now at best a cultural artefact with increasingly niche interest groups. And yet turntablism's inherent musical qualities have become ubiquitous to the point of being implicit. That sort of diverse, evocative sequencing might be where Since I Left You concedes to Wildflower: this album tells a deeper story that only grows more vibrant with every listen. It's not all roses, though. Live vocals have long been purported to be a part of the second Avalanches album, not to mention parts of a record Chater has described as a "hip-hop Yellow Submarine," so the presence of Biz Markie, Ariel Pink, Danny Brown, Toro Y Moi and many others should be no surprise. But some of them do interrupt Wildflower's otherwise graceful flow.

Since I Left You, the 2000 LP that turned The Avalanches into minor musical legends, is an outlier in almost every respect. It’s a lengthy album, one that stretches out over an hour, but its seamless track-to-track glide makes it easy for the listener to get lost within the larger whole. The hundreds - or is it thousands? - of samples that make it up span the majority of the 20th century, but the finished product isn’t attached to any specific musical time period or scene. Wildflower takes you out into the world. I want to focus on Wildflower’s impressive opening sequence, the chunk of the album that actually improves on Since I Left You instead of replicating its successes with a slightly rosier tone. The older album is stuffed to bursting with hooks, but it’s unconcerned with structure, relying instead on repetition and density.

this definitely has pressing flaws like scuffing that causes random surface noise but nothing that ruins the listening experience overall pressing still sounds very decent.

Avoid this pressing! Many returns due to pressing plant issues including deep squiggly marks that cause popping. Get the 8 panel deluxe version or the vinyl me please red version. This version is very poor.
Clever Clever
I got the usual little flakes of paper on the vinyl that come from paper inner sleeves, but I blew them off, and both discs played fine. I too was disappointed with no gatefold and no download card, but the LPs really do sound great. Listening to it on vinyl, broken up over four sides, has made me like it quite a bit more than the initial listens on Apple Music. I was ready to chalk this album up as a huge disappointment, but I like it a lot better now. I'll never like it as much as Since I Left You, but it's really pretty good. I digress a bit, but my main point is my copy plays and sounds fine. There may be some bad copies in the bunch, but mine's A-OK.

I must be lucky, my copy sounds pretty good on my Thorens. Not great, certainly, but no skips and few pops here and there. A little warp but it's very slight. Not off center. Some distortion from time to time, but overall I'd say 4/5 quality on my copy.

awful quality pressing. Disc 1 is chipped and pressed wayyy off center. The lead in almost is non existent. Shame on you Modular.First and last record I buy from you.
kinder kinder
Pretty shit quality control. Got a piece of vinyl hanging off the edge of disc one that causes a huge skip. Oodles of popping. Still don't know why the US was shortchanged with the deluxe edition.

here here. this is an embarrassing attempt to push a product without even noticing that it was pressed off center. pretty sure they had the mentality of "woops... ship it".

Yeah, no download card. Also on side 1 right now and a lot of pops and skips, fresh out of the plastic and first play. I'm so pissed.
Dancing Lion Dancing Lion
No mp3 download card with my copy. Anyone else in the same boat?

Same here. No download card in my copy, which I ordered from Amazon (US). Also sadly no AutoRip from Amazon either.

I don't think one was intended to be included with this release, no mention on the hype sticker or anything.

Very basic non-gatefold package, but has 3 of the gatefold panel images from the deluxe edition printed on picture sleeves, with the remaining panel containing credits.Pretty excellent sounding pressing, "MASTERED BY CAPITOL" stamp in deadwax. My side 4 has some odd scratches on the label but the play area is fine, thank lord.
