The Shaggs were an American all-female rock and outsider music band formed in Fremont, New Hampshire, in 1968. The band was composed of sisters Dorothy "Dot" Wiggin (vocals/lead guitar), Betty Wiggin (vocals/rhythm guitar), Helen Wiggin (drums) and, later, Rachel Wiggin (bass). The Shaggs were formed by Dot, Betty and Helen in 1968, on the insistence of their father, Austin Wiggin, who believed that his mother had predicted the band's rise to stardom

A Chicago DJ (Steve Dahl) championed this band in 1979 on WLUP playing their songs to a bewildered morning drive audience (including the 14 year old author of this post) garnering them probably the biggest audience they had enjoyed. The Shaggs' debut album was not what most people who have heard music before would consider good. It was, however, undeniably unique. Soon after the marathon practices began, he had the girls record an album called Philosophy of the World. Despite the long rehearsal hours, the album was not what most people who have heard music before would consider good. Dot sang off key with bizarre pauses that made it seem almost as if she were reading the lyrics for the first time.

And who could blame them? There is no discernible meter or chord structure to follow, and The Shaggs' melodies are pretty much constructed at random, becoming a series of bastardized scale exercises. Most who have heard The Shaggs know where they stand. To those who think the music is "hilarious," this compilation isn't essential, but will certainly provide more fodder for easy mocking; to those who worship every note the band ever recorded, you almost certainly own this album already in one of its previous incarnations, and are advised to wait it out for the Philosophy of the World five-disc deluxe box set

The Shaggs, who had some material written by Dorothy "Dot" Wiggins, were far from a proficient band when their father drove them to a studio in Massachusetts. The entire album was recorded right there on the spot in just one day. This was due to Austin's request who wanted his daughters to record "while they were still ho. He also got in contact with a shady record company named Third World Recordings and The Shaggs were ready to drop their debut album. And this was the result of their hard work
