The Icicle Works are an English alternative rock band and were named after the 1960 short story "The Day the Icicle Works Closed" by science fiction author Frederik Pohl. They had a top 20 UK hit with "Love Is a Wonderful Colour" (1983). In the US and Canada, they had only one top 40 hit, the 1984 single "Birds Fly (Whisper to a Scream)". Led by singer/songwriter Ian McNabb, the band released five albums from 1984 to 1990 before breaking up in 1991.
Produced by Hugh Jones. Album The Small Price of a Bicycle. Be careful what you dream of It may come up and surprise you I can't confess my life's a mess I've come to idolise you You liken it to walking on hot coals I'll keep my boots on Wisen up and fly straight There's a shape on the horizon.
.A1 seems to be a very slightly altered and extended version of the album version, although I must admit to being to unable to uncover much of a difference between the two songs. Reply Notify me Helpful. Hollow Horse is the only A-side track, and it is the . 7 long version. Side B: BEG-119(T) - B1 as per original issue. Reply See 1 reply Notify me Helpful.
The Small Price of a Bicycle is the second studio album by The Icicle Works. The album was released in 1985 and charted at number 55 in the UK Despite the success of the band's first album in North America, it was unreleased in both the US and Canada, with Arista Records in the US memorably rejecting it as "punk-rock demos"
If not quite as strong as the band's debut album as an experience due to the inclusion of less successful later numbers, all the hit singles and some fine album cuts appear, not to mention an interesting rarity or two. Beginning with the "long version" of the chiming drive of "Hollow Horse" from The Small Price of a Bicycle, this collection fully showcases McNabb's passionate, elegant quaver and driving songwriting, as well as the abilities of the fine Layhe/Sharrock rhythm section.
