The Byrds' Sweetheart of the Rodeo was not the first important country-rock album (Gram Parsons managed that feat with the International Submarine Band's debut Safe at Home), and the Byrds were hardly strangers to country music, dipping their toes in the twangy stuff as early as their second album
Sweetheart of the Rodeo is the Byrds' sixth album. It was the first album recorded after the departure of David Crosby and Michael Clarke, featuring Gram Parsons on guitar and Kevin Kelley on drums. It is significant in that it is the first notable country album recorded by a rock band, laying the foundations for the country-rock subgenre. The album was a flop on its original release, but has since become highly viewed by fans and critics as one of their greatest albums. Tap and hold to copy URL. Sweetheart of the Rodeo Tracklist. 1. The duo later became Sweethearts of the Rodeo, taking the name from The Byrds' album Sweetheart of the Rodeo. After being discovered by Emmylou Harris, they secured slots as opening acts and backing vocalists for other artists. In 1977, the Sweethearts opened a Redondo Beach, California, show for Sundance, a group which included a then-19-year-old Vince Gill. In 1980, Janis married Gill, who by then was a member of Pure Prairie League, and Kristine married Leonard Arnold of the band Blue Steel. In 1983 the Gills moved to Nashville, Tennessee
Roger McGuinn and Chris Hillman, both former members of The Byrds, are hitting the road together this year in honor of the 50th anniversary of the 1960s heroes’ country-rock classic, Sweetheart of the Rodeo; the pair will perform the album in its entirety and tell stories from its recording back in 1968. The Byrds first made their mark in 1965 by reinventing folk songs by Bob Dylan, Pete Seeger and Woody Guthrie along with often-brilliant originals. The key was the 12-string Rickenbacker guitar, a long-necked, futuristic-looking instrument sought out for its radiant, unique clang.

The Byrds, during the not-so-Great Folk-Rock controversy, attempted to qualify their own individual transition by saying: If only one line of ‘Mr. Tambourine Man’ (which they had just recorded) gets through to the kids it’ll have been worth it. The Byrds had all been Folkies and their subscription to Dylan’s new method of getting the message across (something Dylan himself denied trying to do) was of no little significance. What Barry McGuire, Jody Miller and the Byrds were doing was sacrilegious to the hard-core Folkies. The Yin-Yang cycle of the musical flow continues to hold true. The Byrds have made an interesting album. It’s really very uninvolved and not a difficult record to listen to. It ought to make the Easy-Listening charts.
A Harvard drop-out, Parsons met Byrds bassist Chris Hillman at an unromantic Hollywood bank, coerced him into joining the Crosby-less band in Nashville, and, amidst quiet feuding with Roger McGuinn, made what is deniably one of the Top 20 country records of all time.
