Fern Knight is an American psychedelic folk band currently based in Washington, . Formed in 1999 by Margaret Ayre (née Wienk), the group performs music inspired by the spooky, pastoral sounds of classic British acts like Pentangle and Steeleye Span. Their music has been referred to as "a delightfully creepy homage to the Celtic-Appalachian tradition.
Fern Knight weaves an uncommon sound from far-flung musical roots. Under classically trained calist Margaret Ayre's unwavering direction, this DC quartet continues to gracefully color her tightly arranged, smartly produced songs with echos of British folk leanings in the manner of The Strawbs, Sourdeline's trad-folk and old-school riffage in the vein of cult-rockers Asgard.

Needless to say, some of Fern Knight's anachronistic details will require a certain level of tolerance that some more temporally grounded listeners might lack. Personally I wish that Wienk and Weeks had opted to use fewer spacey echo effects on her otherwise crystalline vocals. But throughout the album, glimmers of invention and humor are allowed to shine through, such as on the wry "Synge's Chair". What sounds on the surface to be yet another somber treatment of a traditional folk dirge instead reveals itself to be a comic Irish travelogue.

Fern Knight's third album will on many levels appeal to fans of the early 21st century variations of acid folk music. It has some of the same characteristics: gentle female vocals, a tentative delicacy, and an audible debt to British folk and folk-rock of the late '60s and early '70s (although llist Margie Wienk is American). There are some differences, or at least unusual shadings, that set them off from the pack.

Studio Album, released in 2006. Songs, Tracks Listing. I bought the vinyl LP copy of this album from Greg Walker's Syn-phonic store, and to be honest, I thought I was taking a bit of a chance. It seemed to be referred to as a psych-folk or prog-folk album, and in the past I've found that can really go either way. They can be very fascinating, or quite dull and samey.
