Description

Gradually Going Tornado is the third and final studio album by Bruford. It was co-produced by Weather Report collaborator Ron Malo and released in 1980 (see 1980 in music). In contrast to the band's previous all-instrumental effort, several songs were sung by bassist Jeff Berlin. The closing Dave Stewart composition "Land's End" includes music previously used on the opening and closing tracks of the National Health album Of Queues and Cures (1978).

This is the third studio release of the fusion group that he assembled in 1977. Gradually Going Tornado attempted to further streamline the group's approach and introduced the vocal work of the brilliant electric bassist Jeff Berlin (heavily influenced by Jack Bruce and Jaco Pastorius).

Initial copies came with colour band photo (Jeff Berlin, John Clark, Dave Stewart, Bill Bruford) postcard with 'Bruford - Gradually Going Tornado Polydor EG' on reverse. Jeff Berlin's vocals turned me off right away. Now, having found Gradually Going Tornado for next to nothing at my local shop years ago, the album gets more play than most records in my collection. Once our ear is conditioned, we learn to appreciate vocals or melodic styles that aren't quite conventional boring? This album is incredibly complex. I love it, and it continues to grow on me.
