Captain Beefheart and his Magic Band signed to A&M and released two singles in 1966. The first was a version of Bo Diddley's "Diddy Wah Diddy" that became a regional hit in Los Angeles. The followup, "Moonchild" (written by David Gates, later of the band Bread) was less well received. The Magic Band began recordings for Trout Mask Replica with bassist Gary "Magic" Marker at . on "Moonlight on Vermont" and "Veteran's Day Poppy"), but later enlisted bassist Mark Boston after his departure. The remainder of the album was recorded at Whitney Studios, with some field recordings made at the house. Boston was acquainted with French and Harkleroad via past bands. This was for the production of an album provisionally titled Bat Chain Puller. The band were John French (drums), John Thomas (keyboards) and Jeff Moris Tepper and Denny Walley (guitars).

This, folks, is why you should not attempt to be a pop star, especially if you are an avant-garde genius like Beefheart. The compositions on here are absolutely unimaginative, lackluster, and downright Sad! compared to what you get on Trout Mask Replica, Lick My Decals Off, etc. Lazy Music is right. Beefheart himself encouraged people to take this album and Bluejeans and Moonbeams back to the record store for a refund, though B&M is the better of the two albums because it has Observatory Crest on it. Unconditionally Guaranteed, the universally derided album from Captain Beefheart and The Magic Band is commonly regarded as the nadir of the Captain’s career, the pariah among the pearls. When Unconditionally Guaranteed made its appearance in 1974, things had changed. This was a very different Captain- gone was the cunning word play and rich visual imagery. Gone were the tunes with sharp corners which gave you a quick jab in the ribs just as soon as you thought you had settled into them.
The most reviled album of Captain Beefheart's entire career, 1974's ironically titled Unconditionally Guaranteed unfortunately largely deserves its negative reputation. as the first album of Captain Beefheart's contract with Virgin Records, it's also the last album that features any members of the Trout Mask Replica-era band, notably guitarists Zoot Horn Rollo and Alex St. Clair, plus former Mothers of Invention percussionist Art Tripp.
