jazz lover since 1960. Format: Audio CD. This was recorded in the studio on 4/4/56, one month before the classic "Round About Midnight at the Cafe Bohemia. The latter is a 2 disc set. I can't say if either of these recordings is better than the other, but I can say that this CD is just fine. I just wanted to say the pamphlet to the 2 CD set Kenny Dorham Complete 'ROUND ABOUT MIDNIGHT AT THE CAFE BOHEMIA with Kenny Burrell added for some tracks of the 2'nd 3'rd and 4'th sets, presented as played, mentions this ABC Paramount studio recording, also with J. R. Monterose, and goes on to say that a second session was. made but not released on LP and that the tapes for it were lost.

Kenny Dorham is one of the best yet most overlooked jazz trumpet players. His tunes such as Blue Bossa, Short Story, Escapade and his albums Una Mas, Showboat. He became the trumpet player for one of the original versions of the Jazz Messengers, stood in for Clifford Brown after his tragic passing in the Brown/Roach Quintet, recorded with Monk and Sonny Rollins and continued on to record many landmark albums for Bluenote during it’s golden age in the 1960’s with the great tenorman Joe Henderson. One of the remarkable traits of Dorham, like the other lasting greats in jazz, is that he was able to adapt his style as the music evolved.
