As a dynamic young string ensemble, the Belcea Quartet recorded the complete string quartets of Ludwig van Beethoven in what seemed like record time, releasing them in 2012 and 2013 in two separate volumes. In a sense, the early quartets are punchy and brash, the middle quartets are knotty and serious, and the late ones are elevated but not treated with excessive reverence. Tempos overall are brisk and the tone is sometimes brusque and even rough, creating a harshness and tension that may be too strong for some ears.
The Beethoven Quartet was a string quartet founded between 1922 and 1923 by graduates of the Moscow Conservatory: violinists Dmitri Tsyganov and Vasily Shirinsky, violist Vadim Borisovsky and cellist Sergei Shirinsky (half brother of Vasily). In 1931 they changed their name from the Moscow Conservatory Quartet to the Beethoven Quartet. In the course of its fifty-year history, the Quartet performed more than six hundred works and recorded more than two hundred Russian and international classical works.
Ludwig van BeethovenComplete String Quartets - Vol. 1. During the past ten years the Quartetto di Cremona has matured into a string quartet of international renown, combining the Italian culture of string playing with an awareness of historical performance practice. The first volume of their recording series of the Complete Beethoven String Quartets comprises three distinctive works from Beethoven’s early, middle and late periods. Quartetto di Cremona. Ludwig van Beethoven. Having for many years performed at the great international halls, it is often regarded as the successor to the famous Quartetto Italiano.
The Emerson Quartet is arguably the best string quartet in America: the most in-tune, the most virtuosic, the most expressive, the most intelligent, and the most exciting. For many, perhaps most listeners, the Emerson is the gold standard of American quartets and its recordings of the Beethoven quartets were anxiously awaited as the climax of its career at the time. But for some listeners, all the Emerson's virtues cannot compensate for the its one flaw: it is profoundly superficial. But when Beethoven's quartets require deep emotions or profound spirituality, the Emerson stays resolutely on the surface, unable or unwilling to acknowledge or explore the greater depths of the music.
