The violin sonata is an odd duck, reminding me a little of Bartok's Sonatas for Violin and Piano, at least until the tom-tom enters with its Middle Eastern-flavored dirge rhythm. The part was supposedly written for Antheil's friend, the poet Ezra Pound. Back to Ballet Mecanique: this is one wild ride.
