For John Carpenter, who reunited on the new film with original Halloween star Jamie Lee Curtis, composing the score felt like a homecoming. Not only had he not worked on a Halloween movie in 35 years, he hadn’t composed a soundtrack since his 2001 sci-fi thriller Ghosts of Mars. It was great, Carpenter said of the experience. It was not a movie I directed, so I had a lot of freedom in creating the score and getting into the director's head. I was proud to serve David Gordon Green’s vision

IMO, the artwork cover effect is interesting. I understand most of the people reporting it's hard to see Mike when you hold the cover in your hand; at night it's almost impossible to see Mike. But on sunny days, Mike is more easily viewable. Depending the way you're tilting the cover, Mike is completely hidden (the space between the drops becoming foggy, it's like if you're focusing on a window) or he's showing up behind that "fake window". I guess the artwork was made this way for that purpose.

I don't think that very many know or understand that this Japanese release from 79 was not taken from Carpenter's score at all - rather, it is a rerecording lead by Osamu Shoji (an absolutely incredible Electronica artist in his own right). Obviously based on John's score, but not sourced from anything he had recorded. This Japanese interpretation was recorded a few years before Alan Howarth was asked to produce the stereo mix, the one most of us in the West know and grew up with, used on the US and subsequent vinyl releases.I wonder if this would still trade for the crazy money that it does if people knew that John Carpenter didn't play a note on this?!?
Oveley Oveley
now I want to hear this even more than I already did... do you have a source for Osamu Shoji being on this record? I can't find anything when I search it up.
Steelrunner Steelrunner
Just listen, everything is fine for me on both sides.

Do yourself a favor and stay away from these garbage money grabs and spend a couple extra bucks on the Reissue from 2013 to get better quality sound and artwork.
Gagas Gagas
This version is better than the 2013 garbage. This version is taken directly from the audio layer from the 35mm film of the movie itself. The older versions are taken from digital transfers that were originally mixed for the 20th anniversary CD Soundtrack. Anything mixed for cd is not meant for vinyl...
Musical Aura Island Musical Aura Island
I'm not sure how this version is a "garbage money grab" yet the reissue from 2013 isn't. That version is a reissue (like this version) and has commissioned artwork (like this version). It also adds dialog tracks in between most of the music cues, which breaks up the flow. Also, that version isn't even the same release as this one; it's the 20th anniversary edition. It's the same tracklisting as the 1998 CD edition and might just be a record pressed from the CD for all we know.
Nikojas Nikojas
I much prefer the sound on this pressing, it captures the feeling of the film far better. As mentioned in many of the comments below, all previous releases of this soundtrack were remixed for stereo, whereas this is taken from the original film cues and has all the qualities of those. This pressing sounds and looks great, it's not garbage at all. Also, the 2013 versions go for $100+, whereas this is available now for closer to $35, so it's really not an issue of just a couple extra bucks.
Bu Bu
Not sure why, but the 2013 reissue done by Mondo, a 2xLP set at 45 rpm, doesn't show up on this list. What exactly are the differences between that one and the 2018 reissue on Death Waltz? (aside from cover art) -https://www.discogs.com/John-Carpenter-Halloween-Original-Motion-Picture-Soundtrack/release/5062083

I believe that other version (originally released by Varese Sarabande as a "20th Anniversary" edition and then later by Mondo) has audio clips from the movie spread across the tracks. The version(s) on the page we're on now are the straightforward soundtrack version without dialogue.

For overall pressing quality, this is a solid release. It's hard to believe how good it sounds given it was taken from a nearly 40 year old mono film reel. My only issue is with the cover. I didn't think it made any sense when they posted it online, but having it in hand seems worse. The contrast is way too dark and you can barely see Michaels face unless it is held at the prefect angle under a bright light. I wish they had come up with a better design for the cover, but the quality is top-notch.
Bundis Bundis
I like that it's so nebulous, actually. But... total nitpick here- the only time it rains in the movie is before Michael Myers gets to Haddonfield, which is also before he even has the mask, so... odd choice.
Rarranere Rarranere
Agreed. While I do think it looked pretty cool initially online, I was very disappointed with it in person
crazy mashine crazy mashine
Got mine today. Haven't listened to it yet but there is one glaring omission that no one has mentioned. Where's the directors notes that were included with the other 4 volumes?? Luckily I do have the original Lp which has a nice little piece by John Carpenter himself. Thankfully this will definitely be my last Death Waltz Lp. Like someone else here I've lost the faith......
Broadcaster Broadcaster
great pressing! i really love the artwork and the wax looks amazing but i wish they would have made Michael a bit lighter so the art wouldn't be so hard to view! online it looks amazing but in person it's very very dark for some reason! either way i am really glad they repressed this so i can have the full halloween collection! highly recommend!
Spilberg Spilberg
I loooooove the sound of this. It's exactly as presented in the film, warts and all. Much creepier than the 1983 stereo remix.
Gozragore Gozragore
My copy sounds great! Looks great, sounds great- only complaint (and this applies to their Halloween 1, 2, 4 & 5 releases) are the sleeves. But that doesn't make much difference for me.
Stan Stan
Sound issues aside, you must admit the cover nails the classic scene of Myers standing in the rain.
Naa Naa
lol the only problem is that the scene from the picture don´t exists .. its not raining once in Halloween 1 film
Gugrel Gugrel
Myers in the rain!? Has the artist actually seen Halloween before? When will this silly art stop with all these re-issue soundtrack labels? I'll admit that some of the new covers aren't awful, but so many artists are attempting to give the most obscure reference or different spin they can in their art interpretations on classics that really don't need any help because the original art is usually always great and more iconic than whatever these new artists can come up with. But...as long as sales continue, so will the trend. All complaints aside - this is the way I've always wanted to listen to the score. It is imperfect, poorly mixed, and muddy compared to the stereo mix - but who cares! This sounds absolutely awesome, and is so much closer to my childhood VHS experience than the stereo mix. Thank you Mondo/DW for releasing this!
Lesesshe Lesesshe
Aha. I see what you did there! While it doesn't make sense, I still think it looks really cool.

You do realize that this from the original tapes used for the film in 1977. The "original" vinyl release was remixed by John Carpenter for release in 1983 (not sure if he was even involved in the 1979 Japanese release), and was likely mixed differently since it was for a music release and not the film. My point being that the original vinyl release and subsequent reissues were likely mastered to bring out more low end, which likely wasn't as present in the original music cues in the film. If you want something that sounds like that, then seek out those releases. I'm listening to my orange vinyl pressing and it sounds good on my system. There isn't a lot of low end, I agree, but I don't think it was there in the first place. Remember, this music was done in a few days on a shoestring budget.

Good to know. I doubt most of these people complaining have read the press release info about this particular release. Here it is:"The soundtrack features music composed and performed in 1978 by John Carpenter. The audio is taken from the "music stem” derived from the 35mm mono tracks that comprised the dialogue, sound effects, and music of the original film, which when combined, comprise the complete soundtrack of the classic film. The first LP album of HALLOWEEN - released in 1982 - was a stereo remix of the original 16 masters by Alan Howarth with instructions from John Carpenter to re-mix the tracks to represent the best sound of the music, and not necessarily commit to match the music as mixed for the film. In our 40th anniversary release, Alan Howarth carefully transferred the film's music stem and assembled the score in chronological order as presented in the movie; the listener can visualize the film in their mind's eye while taking a musical journey of the most famous horror score ever! It’s the first time it’s been presented in this manner, and is absolutely terrifying!"This release is supposed to be unique, and if you don't like the way it sounds, there are several other versions out there to choose from.
Domarivip Domarivip
The 1979 Japanese release isn't John Carpenter at all. It's a re-record.
Yalone Yalone
My copy isn't so much noisy as it is ridiculously "thin" sounding. Even cranking my sub up doesn't help much. It doesn't sound "meticulously mastered," it sounds like shit. But I'd like to compare it to an original pressing to see if it's just the way the master sounds or if they did a crappy job (again) with re-issuing a classic. My main gripes with these companies is twofold. For the amount of money that we shell out for these records there always should be A.) a plain black wax version and B.) a digital download. I am way over the cash grab releases that focus solely on the packaging and not the sound.
Cemav Cemav
RIGHT ON, brother! All of your points are spot on, particularly calling out that Alan wouldn't approach this with anything other than complete respect. This is a unique release and frankly the one I've been waiting for all along. Now, if only Mondo or someone could get ahold of Wayne Bell and do something along these same lines for Hooper's Texas Chainsaw Massacre!!
lifestyle lifestyle
That thumping bass drum sound on the main theme is certainly unfortunate. The 2xLP 45rpm set from Mondo seems to be the way to go, if not the new Death Waltz, the latter if you prefer it in original mono and dialogue free (also helps if you’re a fan of cheesy new artwork for classic films).
komandante komandante
criminologue this is the original pressing from 1983 ripped. Thanks for that. I can already tell it sounds better than my Mondo re-issue - even via YouTube. Yours sounds much fuller. I'm convinced Mondo and WW quality control blows when it comes to sound.

As already stated by others here the original soundtrack vs this release are completely different products altogether. Seems folks didn't read the the product description or know the history on the soundtrack before they purchased. I'm sure Mondo/Death Waltz will work with you if you're not satisfied. This is exactly the type of release I have been waiting for (especially through a good analog system). It is presented warts and all given the simplicity of the original recording, the fact that it was sourced from film, and in mono which we aren't used to hearing. In certain parts it seems you can even hear some source degradation, I assume it is that and not just a digital transfer or mastering/pressing flaw. It doesn't appear they have taken extraordinary steps to "clean up" the source material which just adds additional authenticity to the release. I had the pleasure of seeing a 35mm print of this film a couple years ago and it was amazing. They have captured that sonic experience quite well here on vinyl. Alan Howarth doesn't put out BS
Nea Nea
I have an original and this version is mixed horribly. I was so exited to get a new copy of this classic soundtrack and then this shit. I can't believe they heard the mix and said "that's great." The sound dropping out/becoming muffled is ridiculous. Even black wax couldn't have saved it. Their copy of The Fountain on black has as many issues as the other versions. To anyone on the fence just be patient and you can snag an original for 70-80 bucks.
Samut Samut
Noisy disc! The second half of Side A has a click that repeats throughout the tracks. Lots of surface noise too. So, basically, the usual Death Waltz grind.E-mailed them for a replacement.
MrCat MrCat
It has nothing to do with black pressing or color. I also have the box Nightmare on elme street which is very good. However, I have many other black pressing Mondo that do not sound good and others colors that sound good. The color of vinyl has absolutely nothing. The real problem is the pressing plant. Currently, this is pressed in the GZ factory in the Czech Republic, it's a nice shit factory. in the audiophile environment, nobody buys vinyls that come out of this factory.Currently the best pressing plant is MPO in France. Mondo and Death WATz are not going to call this factory.
Cordanara Cordanara
Their reply to me about that was "the record has problems on some tables." I run an ortofon blue on a 1200 so that is a crock of shit.
Arashitilar Arashitilar
The volume definitely drops for no apparent reason on mine as well.Does anyone over at Mondo ever take the time to actually LISTEN to their products?Since an original costs a fortune I will stick with my noisy album since it's all I can afford.
Realistic Realistic
mmmbeefy I'd honestly just prefer a black pressing of these records. I've been saying this for years. i wish these companies would get it through their thick heads that some of us just want good sounding records, not goofy colors.
Yllk Yllk
I'd honestly just prefer a black pressing of these records. The Nightmare On Elm Street Box of Souls set sounds phenomenal with no defects whatsoever. This set on the other hand is rather noisy and of course it's colored vinyl. All of them each have their own defects. On the Tri-Color H2 each time the needle goes over the red or orange part of the record it's noisy, when its over the blue it's fine and it's very noticeable on the quiet parts. Same with the split H4 & H5 records, one color on half of the record is fine but the other is noisy. Really disappointed with these releases...curious if the orange variants to all of these are better. H3 was just noisy all around, but reading some of the reviews on here it's dead quiet for people. When I spun this record though I did notice the audio dropping out so that must be in the mix. I didn't listened to it as loud as I wanted to but I don't remember it being that noisy, I think I remember a few clicks but not that many. Unfortunately I think I'm done with Mondo & Waxwork as well..I will say that their customer service is on point though. My H2 came in with a giant scratch on Side A, I e-mailed them Monday. got a response Wednesday, they shipped out a replacement same day and I got it earlier today.
Zehaffy Zehaffy
Noisy copy and the sound on mine randomly drops out and becomes muffled. Maybe it's the mix, maybe it was my copy, but returned for a refund. Done with Mondo and Waxwork.

Interesting...I don't think the value of the OG presses will go down though.

Interesting. I don't know much about this "spacesizer" version. However, about 4 years ago, the MONDO label put out the entire soundtrack on a double vinyl package, and at 45 RPM. Easily the best sounding version of this soundtrack on vinyl, and for the first time, ALL the music clues are included.https://www.discogs.com/John-Carpenter-Halloween/release/5120558
Na Na
It's a mystery as to why there was a near four year gap between the release of this 79' Japanese 1st release, and the following 83' vinyl USA release. No doubt the film's score has developed cult status some years later & has became regarded as one of the most memorable & definitive horror scores, with its stark minimalist approach (in line with the film's 'less is more' sensibilities), & perhaps took audiences by surprise at the time. Also JC's films didn't always command the box office figures of their big budget contemporaries. Either way, this first version features more dialogue from the movie than later versions, which works great against the score, capturing the feel nicely in the absence of visuals. Japan are regarded highly for the quality of vinyl pressings around this time, & this '360 Spacesizer' recording is no exception... A grail for fans of the dark master...

Quite a repetitive score, but the pressing is very nice and will save you a bit of money instead of forking out for the 78 release, overall a must have for any carpenter fan

Can anyone tell me whether this is supposed to have a proper inner sleeve? The copy I have just has a plastic anti-static sleeve. Many thanks.

A lot of varese'sarabande records from back in the day had the plastic sleeve. I prefer the paper kind myself, but that's the scoop.

Thanks for that :-)

I bought this brand new way back in the 80's and it just had a plastic aleeve.
