Some of that being good some not so good. It does still retain that "classic" Modest Mouse style where Brock's guitar is this really simple scale/riff that repeats itself a lot with some slight variation. But in this album we see alot more effects on the guitar. Something he seemingly used to shy away from. Lyrics - 5 It's been said before but Brock must have been really really death obsessed when he wrote the lyrics. Some of the songs are positively sickningly bad "dance hall:" for example.

Despite their roots in early-90s Seattle, Modest Mouse are the antithesis of guitarry chaos. Making wanton use of the Dirty Dozen Brass Band, whose squealing trumpets pop up like punctuation, and the Rising Star Fife and Drum Band, the album leaps through spiky hoops that must bewilder their junior-high audience.

In 1997 Modest Mouse released The Lonesome Crowded West, an album that would define Indie rock for the rest of the 90s. The album generally dealt with spiritual spiritual issues such as man’s relationship with god and an assortment of secular themes such as the American pioneer spirit. They may never top this album sadly. Though it was critically hailed as a masterpiece and gained the band a substantial cult following, it never truly made them into a recognizable. Then in 2000 Modest Mouse released The Moon And Antarctica

The hype surrounding Good News for People Who Love Bad News, Modest Mouse's second major label effort, has been so thick that it should by all rights suck so bad as to be completely unlistenable. Sure, it starts off sounding like an indie pop joyride with strings, but after the thirteen second breathy threat that is "Dig Your Grave," the album takes a turn back into their classic dark rock on subsequent song "Bury Me with I. It seems to come straight from the Lonesome, Crowded West era. An early highlight is the song "Bukowski," which is lyrically familiar in that "God is a horrible person if he's real" theme.
