Brainoil entered the studio in early 2001 to record for a split CD with fellow Oakland sludge rockers Cruevo recorded by Noah Landis of Neurosis at Mr. Toad's studios in San Francisco. The CD was released by the end of 2002 as a 4-label split release between Shifty Records, Boredom Noise, Berserker and Unknown Controller. This release has since been lost to obscurity through a lack of repressing by any of the labels, and has become something of a collector's item in the sludge world.

Cruevo played a full set live on cable television in 2003. The band's lineup at this point included Greg Wilkinson of Brainoil on bass and Brian Ward of El Dopa (1332) on guitar alongside founders Scott Plumb and Paul Kott. Scott and Paul later formed the stoner metal band Kalas with Matt Pike of Sleep and High on Fire and Andy Branton of Econochrist and El Dopa. Shows and promo pictures with Cruevo and group pictures with Brainoil for CD and live show "battle" promotion.

Cruevo : Cruevo/Brainoil Split. If your into stomping, brooding and heavy sludge doom, this might be the right record for you. This split between these two US bands, will definately fulfill your dreams. This is, without any doubt, "heavy duty shit". Coming forth from such bands as Medication Time and Squat, Cruevo kick off this split with their obviously 'Sabbath influenced music. Three lengthy songs pass by leaving you with the impression that a steamroller has just run over you. However, although their sound is generally very crusty, sludgy and heavy, the band does not forget.
