John Russell (born 1954 in London) is an acoustic guitarist who has worked exclusively in the field of free improvisation since the 1970s. He has been active consistently during that time as a promoter of concerts of freely improvised music in London, providing hundreds of playing opportunities for both local and international musicians. Russell has appeared on more than 50 published recordings.

London-based guitarist John Russell and percussionist Ståle Liavik Solberg from Oslo have worked together as a duo since June 2012 when they first appeared together in London and then toured Scandinavia. No Step was recorded in May 2013 at the Blow Out! concert series that Solberg curates in Oslo. The relative brevity of the album is more than compensated for by its quality. Russell and Solberg give an engaging, straight ahead performance without any trickery or flab.

Second night of this avant-garde jazz mini-fest curated by the brilliant Evan Parker here features another leading light of UK improv, guitarist John Russell. He leads this loose limbed yet highly experienced quintet of Keune (sax), Lovens (percussion), Voelker (accordion) and Wachsmann (violin) in a high spirited freeform music session. Posted: Thursday October 11 2012.
