In paleontology, a Lazarus taxon (plural taxa) is a taxon that disappears for one or more periods from the fossil record, only to appear again later. Likewise in conservation biology and ecology, it can refer to species or populations that were thought to be extinct, and are rediscovered. The term Lazarus taxon was coined by Karl W. Flessa; & David Jablonski in 1983 and was then expanded by Jablonski in 1986.
In fact, A Lazarus Taxon is an inadvertent lesson in how indie rock has changed in the last 10 years. Onstage in 1996 on the DVD, the band locks into its intricate, multi-part music with the implacable faces of tenured calculus professors. The wide-eared listening habits Tortoise helped to foster remain active in 2006, but it's hard to imagine a sweaty, bearded Dan Bitney striding across the stage in a stained babydoll dress any more than John McEntire changing his name to Moonchild McFlowerpot or Koala Bear. And though bookish indie heartthrobs can now make a mint singing about the Cook.

Four discs of dispatches from what the New York Times dubbed "the friendlier end of the avant-garde," the three-CD/one-DVD set A Lazarus Taxon is an embarrassment of riches for fans, either of Tortoise specifically or post-rock in general. In the Chicago of 1993, two rhythm-section members deciding to hire themselves out as the indie version of Sly & Robbie had to be considered utterly foolish
Tortoise: A Lazarus Taxon by AAJ Staff, published on September 18, 2006. Tortoise celebrates its fourteenth anniversary this year with this four-disc box set of rarities and live performances, and it's just as strong as any other release the group has put out. That's saying something, given the quality of what the Chicago outfit has put on wax. Critics and fans have always struggled with a way to label Tortoise, generally agreeing on the term "post-rock" (previously and alternatively known as "kraut-rock," because one of the style's progenitors was the German group Can).

Disc 3 is Rhythms, Resolutions and Clusters, a long since deleted series of remixes of their debut album reissued here complete with a track that, for technical reasons, was unable to be included on the original release. The DVD contains some videos shot for the most part in arty black and white, giving a highly effective visual counterpoint to the music, and there are also some (mostly) well recorded live performances. As good as it is, A Lazarus Taxon is really one for the fans.
