This CD includes a number of songs, most of them written by Gcina Mhlophe. The vocals are by Gcina, joined by her daughter, Nomakhwezi Becker, as well as members of the Children's Choir from 'Entakemazolo HP School in Hammarsdale (a rural area in KwaZulu-Natal). She has written music for the SABCTV series Gcina & F Born in Hammarsdale, KwaZulu-Natal in 1960, Gcina Mhlope now lives in Johannesburg. Gcina Mhlope has been writing and performing on stage and screen for over 20 years. She has written many children's books as well as adult audience poetry, short stories and plays. She produced and performed on a CD for children with Ladysmith Black Mambazo.

Watching Gcina her perform is an experience that a child will never forget. She says, I love sharing my songs and stories with others but my favourite way of relating them is the ancient way of my people– telling them face to face, in front of a live audience. Nokugcina Elsie Mhlophe (born 24 October 1958 ) is a well-known South African anti-apartheid activist, actress, storyteller, poet, playwright, director and author. Storytelling is a deeply traditional activity in Africa and Mhlophe is one of the few woman storytellers in a country dominated by males. She does her work through charismatic performances, working to preserve storytelling as a means of keeping history alive and encouraging South African children to read

Nokugcina Elsie Mhlophe -Becker ( born October 24, 1958 in Durban; born Nokugcina Elsie Mhlophe ) is a South African writer, storyteller and actress. Gcina Mhlophe was born in Durban in what was then Natal, South Africa. Her mother was Xhosa, Zulu, her father. She worked as a news anchor at Press Trust and BBC radio, then 1982-1983 as a writer for Learn and Teach, a magazine for improving reading ability. In 1994 she collaborated on the album The Gift of the Tortoise by Ladysmith Black Mambazo. The following year, she was one of the authors is an adaptation of Bertolt Brecht's The Good Person of Szechwan. The focus of her work is the telling of stories to keep the memory of the traditions alive and to introduce children to encourage them to read. The telling of the stories she connects with singing, dancing and acting.

In a world dominated by technology and mobile devices one South African woman is working hard to keep her ancestors' stories alive - through the spoken word. She also travels the country distributing books and helping to set up libraries in rural areas. Video journalist: Christian Parkinson.
