Dark Was the Night began three years ago with a casual conversation between Aaron and Bryce Dessner of the National and John Carlin (Red Hot founder)

Picking up where they left off on the 2007 compilation ‘Lost & Found – Rockabilly & Jump Blues‘, Keb Darge & Cut Chemist join forces once again, this time to explore the Dark Side of 1960s Garage music

Dark Was the Night is the twentieth compilation release benefiting the Red Hot Organization, an international charity dedicated to raising funds and awareness for HIV and AIDS. Featuring exclusive recordings by a number of independent artists and production by Aaron and Bryce Dessner of The National, the compilation was released on 16 February 2009 (UK) and 17 February (US) as a double CD, three vinyl LPs, and as a digital download

Two decades later, they follow with Dark Was the Night, a collection of 31 new and exclusive songs from most of the heavy hitters of the NPR-friendly wing of indie music. Produced by Red Hot, along with the National's Bryce and Aaron Dessner, the vast majority of the songs on this collection are worth owning regardless of where the money is going. When focusing on what's not here rather than what is, Dark Was the Night comes off as a gray, monotone look at the current indie landscape and, as a result, works best in small batches. It's missing not only rhythm and electronics- more hip-hop, anything in the DFA axis, . Animal Collective, et. but volume and velocity as well. Sure, it's a charity record not a party soundtrack, but No Alternative was full of actual rock songs.

Heartache Introspection Loss/Grief Rainy Day Reflection. The 20th Red Hot compilation Dark Was the Night also arrives during the AIDS charity's 20th anniversary. Curated by the National's Bryce and Aaron Dessner and John Carlin, this double-disc set plays like a who's who of late 2000s indie rock, especially of the mellow and/or folky variety: Bon Iver's Justin Vernon, Iron & Wine, Sufjan Stevens, Feist, Ben Gibbard, and Jose Gonzalez all contribute tracks.

10. 13. Die. 14. Service Bell. Much of the album seem to be B-side material, so I would go into it with that thought in mind. And let's be honest, most of this music, sans a few artists, are bands that basicaly mimic sounds and bands from the late 60's and 70's. And in the case of Sharon Jones, literally mimic 70's R&B radio fare. Cat Power's cover of "Amazing Grace" is simply unbearable for me. They do it very well, but it's not original or overly creative many times.

The only real problem from a writing perspective (and a listening one too, I suppose) is simply where to begin.
