Every song on the album is gold, there’s not a shred of filler, but still there are a few moments that shine out from the splendorous musical jamboree that is this compilation. The Books, those perennial folktronica innovators, team up with Sweden’s Jose Gonzalez to give a haunting cover of Nick Drakes Cello Song, while Feist and Ben Gibbard from Death Cab For Cutie delight us with a soulful duet rendition of Train Song
10. I Was Young When I Left Home. Awesome mix of songs and artists that can only be found on this album. One person found this helpful. I am disappointed in the "Dark Was The Night" cover, can't say the Kronos Quartet did much with it. I'd just assume hear the original song, it's too similar and not nearly as haunting or genuine and soulful. But Feist chimes in well with probably the stand out tune in "Train Song. Stuart Murdoch throws in a somewhat folksy, Velvet Underground-esque "Another Saturday," and Bon Iver, The National, Andrew Bird, Yo La Tengo, DP's & David Byrne, The New Pornographers, Kevin Drew, and The Arcade Fire all contributed good, worthwhile songs.
For 20 years, the Red Hot Organization has been- along with War Child, more on them in the upcoming days- the gold standard for the charity album. Battling HIV and AIDS via pop culture, Red Hot came out of the gate with an eclectic winner, the Cole Porter covers record Red Hot + Blue (1990). Most of our readers are likely more familiar with their 1993 No Alternative disc, which collected tracks from Nirvana, Sonic Youth, Pavement, and others
