John Renbourn (8 August 1944 – 26 March 2015) was an English guitarist and songwriter. He was best known for his collaboration with guitarist Bert Jansch as well as his work with the folk group Pentangle, although he maintained a solo career before, during and after that band's existence (1967–1973). While most commonly labelled a folk musician, Renbourn's musical tastes and interests took in early music, classical music, jazz, blues and world music.

The yin to Bert Jansch’s yang, John Renbourn was garrulous where his colleague was taciturn. Where Jansch was passionate, a player driven by mood, Renbourn was more reliable, a staggering technician. Jansch seemed to find performance a necessary evil; Renbourn, as he is on this live tape at a small club in Japan is expansive and feeding off the developing vibe in the room. This, an enjoyable recently-discovered set from the Jittoko coffee house recorded by an audio archivist named Satoro Fujii, displays Renbourn in full solo effect – an entertaining and highly-accomplished companion.
The year 1965 also saw the release of Renbourn's first solo album, simply titled John Renbourn; on a pair of songs, John was accompanied by Bert Jansch, a like-minded guitarist with whom he was sharing a flat, and in 1966, the two cut an album together, Bert & John. Renbourn continued to record and perform with Bert Jansch on occasion, and Jacqui McShee sang with John's post-Pentangle project the John Renbourn Group, whose 1981 concert album Live in America earned a Grammy nomination. Renbourn stayed busy in the '90s and the new millennium, as he taught, composed, toured internationally, and periodically recorded, and in 2007, when Pentangle received a lifetime achievement award from the BBC Folk Awards, Renbourn joined his bandmates from the original lineup to accept their honors from Sir David Attenborough and perform for the occasion.
