I am the true vine (1996), Triodion (1998), and. (2000) have been recorded before and released in surveys of varied consistency. However, their inclusion here with pieces of the same decade and style makes their place in his late oeuvre perfectly clear.

Polyphony was formed by Stephen Layton in 1986 for a concert in King’s College Chapel, Cambridge. Since then the choir has performed and recorded regularly to great critical acclaim throughout the world. Broadcast highlights include performances of works by Poulenc, Rautavaara, Tormis, Britten and Grainger for BBC Radio 3, works by Arvo Pärt for RTE, and an EBU broadcast of Bach’s Christmas Oratorio. Performances abroad include concerts in France, Spain, Brazil, Denmark and Hungary.

There's a line in this disc's title track, from an Orthodox ode addressed to Saint Nicholas: "therewithal hast thou acquired: by humility - greatness, by poverty - riches. This might have been written about Arvo Pärt's compositional technique, here liberated from the minimalist strictures of earlier decades, treading a fine line between agony and ecstasy in a way unparalleled since Bach. A worthy follow-up to their 1998 Part CD, Berlin Mass, Triodion sees Polyphony and Stephen Layton tackle short choral works from the last few years, only two of which (I am the True Vine and Triodion) have been recorded before. The opener, Dopo La Vittorio, is a wonderfully light, dancing piece followed by the more sombre Nunc Dimittis. is a setting of Christ's genealogy going back to Adam.
